What Is Modafinil?
Modafinil is from the drug class of analeptics. With its help, patients can stay awake for more than 40 hours, with high activity, improved mood, and increased concentration.
Modafinil improves memory and enhances overall perception, response time, and cognitive abilities. It has a softer effect than amphetamines, allowing patients to stay awake for longer periods of time and easily fall asleep after the the drug’s effects has ended.
In the US, modafinil is sold in pharmacies under the name Provigil and is approved by the FDA. It is prescribed for patients suffering from narcolepsy, drowsiness and sleep disorders, dyspnea, and a sharp decrease in the frequency and depth of breathing.
It also does not share the side effects common to other psychostimulants (cocaine, caffeine, amphetamine), such as, for example, hand trembling.
Today, the representatives of many professions that require prolonged wakefulness take modafinil: the army, special forces, doctors, ambulance officers, police, and firefighters. Modafinil is also popular among taxi drivers, truck drivers, and even programmers.
How should I use this medicine?
Modafinil comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. If you are taking modafinil to treat narcolepsy or OSAHS, you will probably take it in the morning. If you are taking modafinil to treat shift work sleep disorder, you will probably take it 1 hour before the beginning of your work shift.
Take modafinil at the same time every day. Do not change the time of day that you take modafinil without talking to your doctor. Talk to your doctor if your work shift does not begin at the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take modafinil exactly as directed.
Modafinil may be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for a longer period of time than prescribed by your doctor.
Modafinil may decrease your sleepiness, but it will not cure your sleep disorder. Continue to take modafinil even if you feel well-rested. Do not stop taking modafinil without talking to your doctor.
Modafinil should not be used in place of getting enough sleep. Follow your doctor's advice about good sleep habits. Continue to use any breathing devices or other treatments that your doctor has prescribed to treat your condition, especially if you have OSAHS.
How Does Modafinil Work?
Modafinil is an oral drug that is used for improving wakefulness in patients with excessive sleepiness. It is similar to armodafinil (Nuvigil). Like amphetamines, modafinil promotes wakefulness by stimulatIng the brain. The exact mechanism of action of modafinil is unknown. It may work by increasing the amount of dopamine (a chemical neurotransmitter that nerves use to communicate with each other) in the brain by reducing the reuptake of dopamine into nerves. Modafinil was approved by the FDA in December 1998.
How Do I take Modafinil?
For most healthy people, 30-50 mg of modafinil will be plenty. It lasts 6-8 hours; take it in the morning, with or without food. I should say that modafinil is a prescription drug; you can talk to your doctor about it. There are places you can get it online; I don’t want to link to them because of legal issues…but you may be able to find a source. Biohack responsibly, of course.
Provigil (modafinil) is a medication that promotes wakefulness. It is thought to work by altering the natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medicine is endorsed for managing sleepiness which is caused by sleep disorder and this tablet also has used to manage the depression symptoms like augmentation of memory and cognitive power.
Take Provigil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Never share Provigil with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction.
Provigil is usually taken each morning to prevent daytime sleepiness, or 1 hour before the start of a work shift to treat work-time sleep disorders.
Where should I keep my medicine?
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
The doctor sets the necessary dosage for the individual patient. The dosage of Modafinil ranges from 200 to 400 mg per day. The tablet is usually accompanied by high liquid intake (preferably a large glass of water). It is desirable to take medicine in the morning so that the state of wakefulness continues throughout the day and less sleep disturbance is observed.
If a patient has hypertension, then during treatment with medication, he or she needs to monitor blood pressure.
If the patient has impaired liver function, then the dose of the drug should be reduced to 100–200 mg per day.
Patients with renal or hepatic impairment should receive a reduced dosage.
Talk with your doctor about what to do if you miss a dose of Provigil. Avoid taking the medicine if you do not plan to be awake for several hours. Skip the missed dose if it is almost bedtime. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
If for some reason the patient took modafinil in large quantities, then he or she might have the following problems:
- Nerve agitation.
- Increased blood pressure.
In case of an overdose, the patient should immediately call an ambulance.
Modafinil has a minimal number of side effects with an impressive result, which is expressed in increased efficiency, improved concentration, and reduced need for sleep. That is why today many military departments of different countries are raising the question of the complete replacement of the traditional amphetamine with modafinil. Due to its outstanding qualities, the drug is actively used among cosmonauts, pilots, and even law enforcement officers. For example, in some US states, police officers receive 200 mg of Modafinil daily to increase productivity and improve response time.
Before taking modafinil, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to armodafinil; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heart problems (such as enlarged heart, mitral valve problem, chest pain, heart attack, irregular heartbeat), heart problems after taking stimulant drugs such as amphetamines (including chest pain, irregular heartbeat), high blood pressure, liver problems, mental/mood disorders (such as depression, mania, psychosis), personal or family history of a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol).
Sleep disorders may reduce your ability to react quickly. Though modafinil helps keep you awake, you still may not be able to safely do things that require quick reactions (such as driving). This drug may also make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
Active Ingredient: Modafinil.
Before using Provigil, tell your doctor if you have angina (chest pain), liver or kidney disease, a heart problem, a history of drug addiction, if you take blood pressure medication, or if you have recently had a heart attack.
Other drugs may interact with modafinil, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
