Addyi is a non-hormonal prescription pill which is used to treat hypoactive erotic desire disorder also known as HSDD in women who are almost facing menopause. It has been labeled the female Viagra. Women with HSDD usually experience low sexual desire, interpersonal difficulty, and exhibit distress.

This situation can come about in women because of health problems or because of certain drug which are also known to reduce eroticl desire. Addyi is only available through certified pharmacies and only in licensed healthcare facilities because it is known to cause severe side effects in cases of drug interactions.

Addyi is available in the form of 100mg tablets. It is also available in its generic form in the brand name Flibanserin.

How should I use this medicine?

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this drug in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than suggested. Use this medicine only at bedtime.

Flibanserin can lower your blood pressure, which can make you dizzy. If you feel light-headed after taking this medicine, lie down if you are not already in bed. It may take up to 8 weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.

How Does Addyi generic Work?

This Drugs works by regulating some of the brain chemicals that affect erotic desire. The active ingredient flibanserin is a post synaptic receptor agonist and antagonist which act on the central nervous system. It corrects the imbalance of norepinephrine and dopamine which are known to be hormones that are responsible for sexual excitement.

At this stage, it is an agonist to stimulate more secretion. It also inhibits the secretion of serotonin which is a hormone that causes sexual inhibition. The drug is not a hormonal drug and does not work like other drugs which are designed to treat erotic disorders in men.

Why is flibanserin (Fliban) controversial?

Female sexual complaints are so, so common, and some of the best data we have say that somewhere between 40% and 50% of women across the spectrum have some kind of complaint of sexual dysfunction. It’s hugely common in one form or another, and there has not been much success in drug development for that.

At the hearing for the advisory committee, the Even the Score group brought in 20 women to provide testimony about the degree of suffering and how their sexual dysfunction was really affecting their lives, their relationships and their sense of well-being.

How serious is female sexual dysfunction and the concerns that women have regarding their libido?

It’s really prevalent across populations. I see mostly peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women but also women in their 20s and 30s as well. [Note: The best study, she said, is a 1999 study in JAMA that found 43% of women and 31% of men complained of some form of sexual dysfunction.] It is very distressful for women, and the FDA has approved the drug specifically for “a lack of sexual desire that causes distress to the woman or in her relationship.” I have a lot of patients who never have sex, and they’re okay with that. The only time it’s a problem is if it’s a problem for the woman or her partner. By definition, it’s a condition that’s causing distress.

What exactly does flibanserin (Fliban) do? How does it act on the body?

That’s what’s really interesting about this. People are hyping this as the female Sildenafil, but it’s really different from Sildenafil in a couple of important ways. Number one, Sildenafil works almost 100% of time for men. But only 1 in 10 women is going to benefit from flibanserin, so it’s much less effective than Sildenafil. Number two, Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis, whereas flibanserin works on neurotransmitters in the brain, almost like antidepressants. [Flibanserin is actually a failed antidepressantwhose mechanism on mice was to act on serotonin in a way different than other antidepressants and to increase dopamine.]

Number three, with Sildenafil, men just take it when they want to have sex. Women have to take flibanserin every day, and it takes about four weeks to begin to see an effect. Peak effects aren’t seen until eight weeks. How many women want to take a drug every day that affects their brain to improve their libido?

Flibanserin contains a black-box warning because it can cause serious side effects when taken by women who drink alcohol, use drugs known as CYP3A4 inhibitors, or have severe liver problems.

In these cases, the drug can cause hypotension (severe low blood pressure) and loss of consciousness.

Because of these risks, flibanserin is only available through certified healthcare professionals and pharmacies.

Before prescribing flibanserin, your doctor will have to review your history of alcohol consumption and consider your likelihood of abstaining from alcohol while taking the medicine.

Before using flibanserin, tell your doctor if you:

  • Consume alcohol or have a history or alcohol abuse
  • Take a CYP3A4 inhibitor
  • Have liver disease or any liver problems
  • Have low blood pressure
  • Have depression or another mental health disorder

Tell your doctor if you don't notice an improvement in sexual desire after eight weeks of using flibanserin.

It's not known whether flibanserin can harm an unborn baby.

Tell your doctor if you're pregnant or might become pregnant while taking this medicine.

Most common Flibanserin (Fliban tablets) side effects with an incidence rate of 2% or more are dizziness, somnolence, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, and dry mouth.

The risk of fainting, particularly when combined with alcohol, is a major concern. Less common Fliban side effects reported in 1% or more of the patients treated with this medicine but less than 2% and at a higher incidence than with placebo included: Anxiety (Flibanserin 1.8%; placebo 1.0%), Constipation (Flibanserin 1.6%; placebo 0.4%), Abdominal pain (Flibanserin 1.5%; placebo 0.9%), Metrorrhagia (Flibanserin 1.4%; placebo 1.4%), Rash (Flibanserin 1.3%; placebo 0.8%), Sedation (Flibanserin 1.3%; placebo 0.2%), and Vertigo (Flibanserin 1%; placebo 0.3%).

During five trials of premenopausal women with HSDD, appendicitis was reported in 0.2% of Flibanserin-treated patients, while there were no reports of appendicitis in the placebo-treated patients. Similarly, During trials of premenopausal women with HSDD, accidental injury was reported in 2.7% of Flibanserin Tablets-treated patients and 2.5% of placebo-treated patients.
