Vfend Generic (Voriconazole)
Vfend (Voriconazole) is an antifungal prescription medicine
approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of
certain fungal infections, such as esophageal candidiasis. (Esophageal
candidiasis is an infection of the esophagus.)
Esophageal candidiasis is an opportunistic infection (OI) of
HIV. An OI is an infection that occurs more frequently or is more severe in
people with weakened immune systems—such as people with HIV—than in people with
healthy immune systems.
How does Vfend work?
Vfend works by preventing fungi from producing a substance
called ergosterol, which is a component of fungal cell membranes. The cell
membranes of fungi are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances
from entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out.
What is Vfend used for?
Treating serious fungal infections caused by Candida,
Aspergillus, Scedosporium, and Fusarium species of fungi, primarily in people
with progressive and possibly life-threatening infections.
Preventing invasive fungal infections in people who have had
an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant).
